History
The first edition of the Deutscher Bibliothekartag (German Librarians’ Day) took place in Marburg in 1900. Since then, the largest national training event has been held annually in the German speaking countries.
Originially, the Deutscher Bibliothekartag was restricted to librarians of academic libraries only; but eventually it was opened to librarians of public libraries as well. A chronology of all past editions of the Deutscher Bibliothekartag can be found in this overview.
The conference is organized by the Verein Deutscher Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare e.V. (VDB) and the Berufsverband Information Bibliothek e.V. (BIB).
Every three years, the Deutscher Bibliothekartag takes place in Leipzig in conjunction with the German Library Congress, organised by Bibliothek & Information Deutschland (BID).
The Deutscher Bibliothekartag is hosted every year (except of the year 2003 due to IFLA – The World Library and Information Congress – taking place in Germany) in May or June in alternating German cities. As in 1998, Frankfurt/Main will be host once again in 2017 to the Deutscher Bibliothekartag. The motto in 1998 was “Progress is Impossible Without Change”.
